Make sure CFLs meet Energy Star standard

CFL (Compact fluorescent light bulb)Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative supports the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which are far more energy efficient than standard, incandescent bulbs.

The cooperative has distributed many CFLs free to members who attend their co-op's annual meeting, to encourage members to try them. CFLs cost more up front, but save energy – and reduce your power bill – over the long term. Now, many retailers now offer CFLs, and prices continue to decline.

Make sure your CFLs comply with quality standards of Energy Star, a program of the federal Department of Energy. In the long run, lamps that meet Energy Star quality requirements will significantly reduce costs. Look for the Energy Star logo on bulbs and packaging.

Over 300 bulb models have been disqualified since testing began in July 2000; this represents over 10% of all models produced. For data on qualified and disqualified bulbs, see the CFL Product List at energystar.gov. For a list of all Energy Star CFL partners, see the Manufacturer List at the site.
