2007 Bright Ideas Grants
In October 2007, the Mid-Carolina Electric Grant Patrol visited 17 teachers and presented grants ranging from several hundred dollars to $1,000. Teacher: Jeannene Main Fifth grade students will record their reading and sync to MP3 Player which will be available to primary grade teachers to use in their reading instruction. Teacher: Anya Degtyareva School: Gilbert Elementary School Project: Buckle Up! We are traveling to... Grant Amount: $805.00 Uses an outside artist to illustrate how musicians can perform and use talents without being formally trained. Teacher: Cynthia Gardner School: Lake Murray Elementary Project: The Art of Science Grant Amount: $575.00 Students will be guided to use a scientist's brain, poet's heart and a painter's eye as they investigate the natural world around them. Teacher: Dorie Bermas School: Midway Elementary School Project: Watch Us Grow: Life Cycles Grant Amount: $860.00 Using leveled texts to promote French literacy and fluency by students. Teacher: Katy Handel School: White Knoll Elementary School Project: Family Involvement Through Video Grant Amount: $295.00 Using the One Minute Reader to assist learning disabled students. Helps the student self evaluate and improve skills to pass DIBELS benchmark testing. Teacher: Lois Byars School: Lake Murray Elementary Project: Colonial Days Alive Grant Amount: $1,000.00 Use an atlas to connect world history and world geography in an organized geographic overview. Gives students the opportunity to visualize history. Teacher: Julie Krusen School: Dutch Fork High School Project: Using PASCO Probeware to Connect Science and Math Grant Amount: $990.00 Bring character concepts to life by providing photographs of students and staff demonstrating positive choices. Uses real life examples to encourage students. Teacher: Valerie Price School: Pelion Middle School Project: Captivating Culture Capers Grant Amount: $725.00 Students investigate ancient and medieval innovations and inventions, while applying modern-day principles and resources to create imaginative slide shows, inspired replications, and authentic recipes. Teacher: Crystal Lominick School: R. H. Fulmer Middle School Project: Understanding Flight Grant Amount: $995.00 Students will learn the concepts of flight, engineering and drafting by constructing various types of airplanes and testing, evaluating and recording the planes' flying abilities. Teacher: Amy Gunter School: White Knoll Elementary School Project: Ready, Set READ Grant Amount: $925.00 Purchase portable mp3 players to store all music in one accessible location in order to make more effective use of classroom time. Teacher: Sandy Collins School: H. E. Corley Elementary School Project: Handwriting without tears Grant Amount: $720.00 Students with disabilities learn basic handwriting through use of manipulatives, song, movement and play. Teacher: Melissa Bull School: H. E. Corley Elementary Project: Language for Learning Grant Amount: $950.00 Designed to use literature to support topics explored in content area classrooms. Read novels for richer understanding and experience of the subject matter. Teacher: Pascha Chrisley School: Hollywood Elementary Project: "History: We're Digging It" Grant Amount: $900.00 Create family literacy nights to promote literacy in the home. Teacher: Laurie Taylor School: Chapin High School Project: "Say Cheese! You're Busted!" (Forensic Photography) Grant Amount: $950.00 Captivating Culture Capers provides multicultural experiences through history, language arts, technology, visual arts, culinary adventures and community members' expertise. Teacher: Drema Watts School: Irmo Middle School Project: TOOLS (Teaching Others Occupational Leadership Skills) Grant Amount: $800.00 Students will visit businesses to learn skills needed and participate in mock interviews, learn proper resume writing techniques, and job research skills. Projects, a portfolio and a presentation to other students will be required. Teacher: Trina Dickerson School: Dutch Fork Middle School Project: Digital Science Pictorial Catalogues and Data Journals Grant Amount: $1,000.00 Through the use of digital cameras, computers, and compact discs, students will comprehend complex scientific concepts as they compile yearly digital catalogues for use as study aids and presentations. Teacher: Joyce Freeman School: Columbia High School Project: Making Change Grant Amount: $460.00 In real-world learning atmosphere, students will learn to operate various business machines and the correct procedure for returning change to customers, providing students with marketable job skills and enhancing their math skills. Bright Ideas is open to classroom educators of grades kindergarten through twelfth grades in Lexington School Districts One, Two, Three and Five: Hollywood Elementary (Saluda County) or at Pinegrove, Rhame, and Sandel Elementary schools (Richland County). Private schools within MCEC service territory are also eligible. Application are accepted May September of each year. |
