WIRE helps children’s hospital patients shop for loved ones

When you’re sick and in the hospital, you can’t go shopping for gifts to give your family for Christmas. The patients at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, however, went shopping for Christmas gifts without having to leave the hospital.

Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) members from Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative participated in Operation Santa during a recent visit to the children’s hospital. Operation Santa, an annual program sponsored by WIRE, allows children who have not been able to shop for loved ones an opportunity to participate in the giving spirit of Christmas by picking out gifts for their family members. All of the gifts are given free of charge to the children by WIRE.

“It is never fun to be sick, but especially at this time of year. Our WIRE members want to help the children who are spending time in the hospital a chance to give to their families during the holidays,” says Emily Leaphart, public relations coordinator for Mid-Carolina Electric. “We want to stress the importance of giving to others during the Christmas season.”

In addition to shopping, the real Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be there to help the children enjoy the giving part of Christmas and tell Santa exactly what they want for Christmas.
