Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative Celebrates Safety, Wins Award
Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative celebrates a safety milestone. November 7 marked two-years without a loss-time accident at the cooperative.
Mid-Carolina Electric employees have posted over 540,000 man-hours without a serious accident since November 2007, according to Peggy Dantzler, safety and loss control coordinator. The cooperative had not reached such a milestone since 1998.
Mid-Carolina’s safety efforts help reduce risks that could injure people and affect the co-op’s operations and insurance costs. The cooperative maintains a comprehensive safety program that includes continuous training for employees, educational programs and electrical safety presentations for school and community groups as well as public safety departments.
The Midlands Utilities Coordinating Committee (MUCC) recently awarded Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative the MUCC Contractor of the Year Award for outstanding efforts in damage prevention.
The award is usually given to a contracting company that takes extra care in preventing damage to buried utility lines. Mid-Carolina Electric works hard, taking over 2,000 calls a month for locating services, to make sure their underground lines are clearly marked. In addition to making sure Mid-Carolina Electric’s lines are marked, their crews take care to preserve the buried lines of other utility companies as well.
“It’s a team effort,” says Lew DuBose, dispatch supervisor for Mid-Carolina Electric. “Our employees and the employees of other utilities work together to make sure the community is safe when they dig around buried infrastructure,” he notes.
MUCC brings utility companies together to provide a forum for the organizations to improve, maintain, and make recommendations for utility and roadway infrastructure. The organization works closely with Palmetto Utility Protection Services (PUPS) to locate underground cables in an effort to protect the community and to prevent damage to the buried infrastructure.
Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit electric distribution utility headquartered in Lexington, SC. Mid-Carolina serves over 42,000 members in Lexington, Richland, Newberry, Saluda, and Aiken counties.
