Members Empower Green Power Mid-Carolina Electric's Green Power Program has been well received by member-owners. "Our members understand that this is a great way to help improve our environment," said Betty McWhorter, Mid-Carolina Member Services Supervisor. "We have had a tremendous response in just a short period of time." The Green Power Program is South Carolina's first source of renewable power generation. Generated by Santee Cooper and distributed by MCEC, South Carolina's Green Power plant collects methane gas emitted by decomposing garbage at a landfill operated by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. There, the methane gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere – gases that possibly contribute to global warming – are used as "green power" fuel. Mid-Carolina members can now voluntarily purchase this Green Power for just $3 per month for 1 Block (100kwh), $6 per month for 2 Blocks (200kwh) and $9 per month for 3 Blocks (300kwh). They can also choose to purchase any number of blocks for $3 each. You will not notice any difference in your electric service when you sign up for the Green Power Program. The renewable energy purchased by participants is pooled with energy from conventional sources and delivered through the same power lines. "Our members asked for this program and we’re happy to do our part to make it available to them," McWhorter said. For more information or to sign up for Green Power, contact us at 749-6400 or toll free in SC at 888-813-8000. You can also visit our Green Power section of www.mcecoop.com. Participation in Green Power is voluntary by MCEC and its members. A member may discontinue participation in Green Power at any time. MCEC may alter, amend or end Green Power at any time. |
