Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative presents 2007 Angel of Comfort Awards

Lexington, SC, December 4 — The 2007 Angel of Comfort winners were announced as Mid-Carolina held their Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) annual meeting on November 27 at Gibson Commons. Receiving awards were Barbara Hamilton of Leesville, Sonja Carnaggio of Little Mountain, Denette Rimer of Gilbert, and Charlene Pankow of Lexington.

"The women were nominated by their fellow members," explained Emily Leaphart, Public Relations Coordinator. "Our Angel of Comfort award recognizes WIRE members who provide exceptional service to either their community, WIRE or the cooperative. Each of these women made special efforts to support WIRE, and their peers recognized these efforts."

Barbara Hamilton received the award for Holly WIRE. Hamilton was described as an Angel of Comfort to her family, community, her church and to WIRE. She regularly visits nursing homes, delivers meals on wheels, is very involved in community affairs, and "never says no to a request for help."

Sonja Carnaggio was the recipient for the Light WIRE chapter. Carnaggio is a talented and creative individual that keeps the interest of the whole chapter in mind. She chairs or co-chairs many of her chapters programs and activities.

Denette Rimer was selected as the Guide WIRE recipient. She is described as always willing to help and has chaired many projects over the last few years. She has also held the positions of President and Treasure for her chapter.

Charlene Pankow received the WIRE President's Award. This award is chosen by the Guide WIRE chapter president for outstanding service to the organization as well as to the president. Peggy Dantzler, president, describes Pankow saying "what stands out is her cheerful willingness to assist in whatever way is needed for any given project. Her humor and honesty have been true assets."

WIRE was organized in 1990 by Mid-Carolina Electric. "We are very proud of our WIRE organization," said Jack F. Wolfe, CEO. They are the community-action arm of Mid-Carolina and provide benefits to our consumers that the staff and board are unable to provide. These women have won state and national awards for their community outreach programs and are an important part of our cooperative."

With more than 175 active members, WIRE is open to all female members of the cooperative, wives of members and co-op employees and trustees. The three chapters (Light, Holly, and Guide) meet quarterly in the cooperative service area and have raised more than $50,000 for breast cancer patients in the past seven years.
