MCEC Lexington County Taxes
As one of the largest taxpayers in Lexington County, Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative (MCEC) paid almost $5 million in taxes in 2006. MCEC Board Treasurer Cliff Shealy presented a check to Lexington County Administrator Katherine Hubbard and Chairman Billy Derrick for property taxes totaling more than $2.2 million. "We aren’t just a power company, we’re a local business," Shealy said. "Like all individuals and businesses, Mid-Carolina annually pays taxes in each of the five counties that we serve. In fact, this year more than $640,000 was paid in Richland County." The only tax the cooperative does not pay is income tax. MCEC is a not-for profit electric utility serving more than 48,000 accounts in Lexington, Richland, Saluda, Aiken and Newberry Counties.
