Record crowd attends MCEC's annual meeting

April 16, 2007 — A record crowd of more than 8,000 people attended Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative's (MCEC) annual meeting on Friday night at Lexington High School.

Co-op members elected to the Board of Trustees were Lavenia D. Hentz (Irmo), Rusty S. Shumpert (West Columbia), and Robert J. (Bob) Caughman (Gilbert).

Ken Frick, board chairman, acknowledged CEO Jack F. Wolfe, Jr. who was recently elected President, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Board of Directors. NRECA is the national service organization representing the nation's more than 900 consumer-owned electric cooperatives that serve more than 40 million people in 47 states.

Chalmus Hancock of Saluda and John Corley of Irmo, recent retirees from MCEC Trust Board, were recognized for their community contributions. "Both men have been dedicated servants to the Cooperative, our members and the community through their participation on the Trust Board," said MCEC CEO Jack F. Wolfe. "They are a shining example of what devotion to one's fellow man means to all of us."

Wolfe thanked MCEC's member advisory chairpersons who represent the Cooperative's six committees throughout the five-county service area. "The 150 members who serve on Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative Advisory Committees are our eyes and ears in the community," Wolfe explained. "They are liaisons between you, your board and the staff. For almost 30 years they have provided us valuable information and support throughout the communities we serve."

The Cooperative paid tribute to the eight students who were recently named 2007 Touchstone Energy Scholarship winners. They are J. J. Crapps of White Knoll High School, Brandy Veres, Gilbert High, Abbigail Alexander, Airport High, Kelli Rush, Irmo High, Rachel Coleman, Saluda High, Amanda Boozer, Batesburg-Leesville High, Brendon Mullen, Dutch Fork High, and home school student Rob Jeffcoat. Each student receives a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their choice.

Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative's 2007 Youth Tour representatives, Courtney Lake (Saluda High) and Daniel Lynch (Irmo High) were thanked for accepting the challenge of the Youth Tour contest. They will represent MCEC this summer on the 50th Washington Youth Tour, sponsored by electric cooperatives from across the nation.

Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit business with headquarters in Lexington and another operations center in the Dutch Fork area. The 67-year old utility provides electricity to more than 48,000 accounts in Lexington, Richland, Newberry, Saluda and Aiken counties.
