HR creator retires from MCEC

January 31, 2007 — Linda Spence, Vice President for Human Resources and creator of Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative's (MCEC) HR Department, retired after more than 31 years of service.

"Prior to 1975," said Jack Wolfe, MCEC President and CEO, "there was no personnel department at the cooperative. Rapid growth during that time brought change, and Linda Spence stepped in to build a new department. Linda's thoroughness to details, service to the employees and expertise as a benefits administrator has made our human resources department a pattern for success. We have been fortunate to have Linda as part of the cooperative. She is well respected by her peers and professional colleagues. Linda will certainly be missed by the co-op family."

While at MCEC, Spence authored and developed the cooperative's employment policies and procedures, employee handbooks and Mid-Carolina's Service Restoration Plan. She was a founding member of the Association of SC Cooperative Human Resource Managers and past president. Throughout her career, Spence served in leadership positions in the Midlands Employer Health Council, Lexington Chamber of Commerce Business and Industry Council, American Society of Human Resource Management, SC Industry Liaison Group Board and Columbia Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management. She was also involved in the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and SC Chamber of Commerce HR committees. In 1986 Spence received the Award of Professional Excellence for Human Resource Management from Columbia Chapter of Society of Human Resource Management.

Spence is replaced by Fred Millen. Millen has 18 years experience in human resources. He is a certified Senior Professional of Human Resources and a member of the Columbia Society of Human Resource Managers and National Society of Human Resource Managers.
